What are objectives?

Objectives are one sentence and help dial in what successful target completion will look like… If you’re familiar with the SMART framework for goaling setting, objectives help with the “s” or “specific” part of goal setting. Another helpful reference is if you’ve ever had a class with a syllabus, many include “learning objectives” that outline the key outcomes the teacher hopes each student will come away from the semester having learned.

SMART targets via good objectives

Good objectives specify the most important aspects of a Target; they are the most central intentions, aims, or goals for that specific Target. Good objectives help a Target be SMART by following these rules:

  • Specific – One concrete, tangible outcome
  • Measurable – A clear definition of success
  • Attainable – Is reasonable to achieve
  • Relevant – Aligned with the Target
  • Time-bound – Has a specific (and realistic) deadline

Requirements of objectives?

Every target requires there to be at least one objective; after all, there needs to be at least one good reason for setting a goal! The person making the target sets the objective(s) during target creation. They can also add objectives as more complexity comes up down the road by editing the target or adding an objective directly from the target details. Objectives by default are assigned to everyone assigned the target, but if for some reason it’s helpful, they can also be edited to only be for certain people and not others on the target.
