What is an Objective?

Definition and quick examples of objectives

💡
An objective is a milestone or desired learning result of a target used to increase clarity and enhance execution

In other words, objectives help dial in what success would look like for this target. You can use them to describe key milestones for the target or what you will get out of the target (similar to learning objectives from a class). Typical targets have 3-5 objectives.

Examples for job/professional development targets (pulled from different targets😆):

  • Research market trends to inform strategic campaign creation for quarter 3 and increase natural impressions by 10%
  • Upscale personal HR knowledge to be able to more quickly reply to employee questions without having to ask my manager
  • Become more effective as a leader by intentionally creating space in meetings for all voices on my team to be heard

Objectives can also be helpful in providing clarity on what is not the focus. So for example a personal growth target related to fitness may specify…

  • Focus on enhancing muscle definition, not on cutting overall body fat percentage
  • Increase running endurance and workout recovery process (not running faster per mile)
  • Replace 1 “junk” food snack a day with a healthier alternative such as a veggie-based food
